What can you use the app for?

Metacritic is an application that takes into account the various reviews of a movie, game, television show, or other entertainment media, aggregates the data and assigns an overall metascore. Scores are weighted, giving some critics or publications more significance due to their overall quality. The site is designed to offer users a clear picture of what the item being reviewed is like before they purchase.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

Launched in 2001 by three former attorneys, Metacritic has become an established database of reviews of various entertainment and media. The goal of the site is to provide users with access to reviews so that they can make informed decisions when choosing to spend money on entertainment. Metacritic was acquired by CNET Networks in 2005. Approximately 400,000 unique visitors visit Metacritic.com each month.

What are the differences to other apps?

Rather than offering a single review, this application takes a look at several reputable sources, analyzes the reviews and gives the item (show, album, game, etc) an overall score. This saves searching through multiple reviews and trying to make sense of conflicting viewpoints, although the reviews are available for users to peruse.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

The application is very easy to use. By choosing an item to view, users will find a metascore with a notation of how many reviews were considered, and an overall user score. Below a brief summary, the critics’ reviews are provided, along with each one’s scores. Users are also invited to review media and offer scores. To provide input, a user simply clicks a “vote now” button and completes a short form.

The features section provides articles related to movies, television, music, and games. These include video clips and links as well as news.

The Metacritic forum is a place for users to interact and discuss entertainment. There are sections dedicated to games, movies, television, music and books. It would appear that books were once reviewed on the site, but are no longer listed formally.

How does the registration process work?

No registration is required.

What does it cost to use the application?

There is no cost associated with the use of Metacritic.
